My name is Toni Owens, and I am a Ph.D. Candidate in the Human & Community Development program, born and raised in Kansas City. I am a licensed social worker and adjunct instructor with work experience in multicultural student affairs and diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. I will prospectively graduate by May 2023 and will transition to a full-time career that will combine my passions for higher education, social work, and community development. I have been teaching on the collegiate level since 2020 and I completed my certificate in University Teaching in 2021. In the Spring of 2021, I am the Program Director/Coordinator for the "Passport to Holistic Wellness - A Personal Journey" program (implemented Fall 2021, fully funded by a grant from the Office of Health Promotion and Wellness) and the "Black at WVU" project (expected to begin April 2022). I am currently a member of the Kansas City Association of Black Social Workers, WVU's Faculty Justice Network, the K-State Social Work Community Advisory Committee, NAACP, ACLU and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. I am a committed advocate that personally and professionally promotes mental/emotional wellness and social justice for all.
